Set on 150 acres, the originally bark hut was built by a family of timber cutters in the mid 1890s when the railway was being constructed. They came to cut sleepers for the railway. The family lived in the hut with their nine children, likely all sleeping in the one bedroom, walking to the nearby stream for water and cooking only on the outside hearth.
Restored in 2017, the hut's heritage and character has been carefully preserved in the old style - with hand cut beams, bark stripped from the local Stringy Bark and Peppermint gums and pressed earth flooring made from mud and linseed oil.
